How GPs Can Foster Accountability in Their Practice

When doctors choose to specialise in areas such as General Practice, their focus is on providing quality patient care, not necessarily on managing a busy practice and team. However, running an efficient practice requires a blend of leadership and management skills—especially when it comes to ensuring accountability among staff. “Without responsibility, there is no accountability,” says Asumpta Gallagher, “Without responsibility, there is no accountability,” says Asumpta Gallagher, CEO of Best Practice. “Many GPs assume that by hiring competent clinical and administrative staff, the team will naturally fall into their roles. But clear communication and setting expectations are essential for accountability.”

One strategy to foster accountability is to attach clear timelines and conditions to tasks. For instance, instead of simply assigning a job, say, “Can you confirm by lunchtime if this is completed?” or “Once the phone message is updated, can you inform me so we can test it?” By setting these parameters, team members understand the urgency and expectations, making it easier for GPs to follow up.

Additionally, GPs can provide opportunities for team members to communicate challenges. A simple, “If you face difficulties with this task, let me know by tomorrow evening,” encourages openness and collaboration. These small but effective strategies can significantly enhance team accountability within a practice.
